UC DAAP to Host IASDR Conference

UCDAAP #IDSACDDC

Declaring “explosive changes in design in the past 20 years call for a reexamination of design research’s accomplishments, aims and possibilities”—the seventh International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR) Congress will be held for the first time in North America.

#IASDR2017 is set Oct. 31–Nov. 3, 2017 at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (UC DAAP). Registration will continue onsite.

The conference is co-chaired by Gjoko Muratovski, PhD, director of the School of Design at UC DAAP and Craig Vogel, FIDSA, associate dean at UC DAAP. “The traditional boundaries of design are dissolving and connections are being established with other fields at an exponential rate,” says Vogel. “At UC DAAP, we are uniquely positioned to address these changes and challenges.”

Educators and practitioners will discuss the array of possibilities for design and design research in the century ahead—under the theme Re:Research. “With the ongoing, dramatic transformation of the design paradigm, the role and significance of design research today requires us to reframe and rethink,” says Kun-Pyo Lee, president, IASDR. “Research on the new roles, significance, methods, processes and identity of design must be intensified and expanded more than ever.”

Speakers come from major corporations such as Amazon, Procter and Gamble and Facebook; universities; and design firms. The lineup also includes IDSA members such as Bob Schwartz, FIDSA, GE Healthcare; Don Norman, IDSA, University of California at San Diego; and Ryan Eder, IDSA, IncludeFitness. Papers and posters will be presented in three areas:

  • Fundamental Research, disciplinary and interdisciplinary, within a university including history, theory and criticism that address philosophical arguments basic to design
  • Collaborative Research, university and external organizations on the development of new methods, innovation and user experience
  • Research in Practice, by public agencies, nonprofits, corporations and consultants; strategies and case studies that apply to the practice of design in government, industry and consulting including service design, interaction, products, product systems, environments and architecture

IASDR was developed nearly two decades ago. It holds a conference every two years, mostly in Asia; one has been held in Europe.

UC DAAP’s School of Design was the site of IDSA’s Central District Design Conference from March 31 to April 1, 2017.
