About

HS Design is a renowned consulting firm specializing in medical, pharmaceutical, life science, and consumer medical product development. We are comprised of an expert team that can take an idea from user research and human factors analysis through UX, UI, and industrial design and ultimately to mechanical and electrical engineering and product realization. Our User Centered Product Development Process realizes every program has its own set of dynamics, goals, and requirements that make it unique.  We have developed a design methodology that incorporates a phased approach, which helps navigate our clients through the design process.  This detailed strategic method ensures timely and informative collaboration with critical go/no go gates.  We adapt to your needs and internal capabilities to guide you through the development process.

HS Design started some 40 years ago and has created over 400 successful products and won numerous awards. Our designers have been in the OR, surgical suites, central labs and understand the sensitive & ethical nature surrounding medical product development. Our combination of Research, Design, and Engineering allows us to design for diverse environments.  Our implementation to manufacturing makes it a reality.

Project Portfolio

gammaCore Sapphire

HS Design partnered with the electroCore team to design gammaCore Sapphire™, a handheld, non-invasive vagus nerve stimulator (nVNS) which treats pain related to migraine and episodic cluster headaches. Designed as a portable, easy-to-use technology, the therapy can be self-administered via placement on a patient’s neck over the vagus nerve, stimulating the nerve’s fibers and resulting in a reduction of pain.

Migraines and cluster headaches are debilitating conditions that impact all aspects of a person’s life. Many sufferers of these conditions are not satisfied with current treatments with concerns ranging from inconvenience to inconsistent relief. HSD redesigned the previous generation gammaCore device by utilizing feedback from user studies to improve the user experience and workflow while refreshing its brand identity. gammaCore Sapphire™ gives users a fast and reliable treatment to a debilitating condition that alongside other treatments can reduce the frequency of cluster attacks.

SeLux Diagnostics Next Generation Phenotyping Platform

HSD is working with SeLux Diagnostics to develop a Next Generation Phenotyping (NGP) platform. This breakthrough innovation in antimicrobial susceptibility testing will transform the treatment of infectious diseases by fast-tracking targeted antibiotic therapies within 24 hours.

HSD has successfully translated SeLux’s technology and processes into user-friendly lab diagnostic equipment. The platform is united by a visual and physical design language that HSD developed, as well as common usability and interaction touchpoints. This ensures that a user can easily transition from one piece of equipment to the next without being hindered by unfamiliar or contrasting interactions.

BioTrak Health Halo

HS Design teamed with BioTrak Health to develop Halo™, a new mobile digital health and therapeutic system. More than 80 million Americans, and 2.4 billion people worldwide, suffer from frequently recurring tension headaches, migraines, or TMJ pain. Unfortunately, most of the current pharmacologic treatment options for these debilitating conditions are only modestly effective and can have negative side effects.

Halo™ provides biofeedback-assisted relaxation training which has been clinically proven to be equally or more effective than drugs for treating tension headaches, migraines, and TMJ pain without the negative side effects. Halo™ senses subtle changes in muscle tension, alerts users with a gentle vibration, and coaches users through relaxation training exercises. HSD completed a technology assessment of the electrode and sensor materials, industrial design of the headband, and design of the accompanying iOS application.

VECTRA WB360

HSD partnered with Canfield Scientific on the design and development of the world’s first 3D whole-body imaging solution: the VECTRA WB360. Designed for medical use, this innovative system images nearly the entire skin surface in macro-quality resolution with a single capture.

After years in development, Canfield tasked HS Design with bringing the concept to life in a form that is open, welcoming, and within Canfield’s brand identity.  In just under one year of development, the HS design and engineering teams helped Canfield bring their technology to market. The VECTRA WB360, fully-equipped with 92 precisely positioned cameras, produces a three-dimensional image of the entire body, precisely replicating body shape and skin features. These images are an indispensable tool for dermatologists and plastic surgeons, allowing them to analyze and monitor skin conditions efficiently and with confidence.

Endoluxe Vision System

The Endoluxe Vision System is a three-part system designed to redefine the endoscopy experience. The Endoluxe Orb is a smart attachment feature that incorporates with traditional endoscopes and upgrades them to allow for a suite of features ranging from screen casting to image and video capabilities. The orb wirelessly communicates with the Endoluxe Receiver that can turn any monitor or tablet into a broadcast screen. Along with these capabilities is a software platform that offers HIPAA-compliant cloud-based media storage, sharing, and streaming for documentation, patient education, referrals, and consultations.

Traditional endoscopies require an endoscope to be physically connected to a cart system. This tethered connection interferes with use and the cart system occupies valuable space. HS Design aided Endoluxe in the design, user studies, and engineering that shattered perceptions of current endoscopic suites by creating the wireless, portable, hand-held device known as the Endoluxe Vision System.

Sympfiny

Oral Multiparticulates provide an excellent platform for pediatric medicines by having no inherent taste. However, the ability to dose accurately with minimal effort was a challenge. Sympfiny™, the breakthrough system designed by HSD Ventures™, enables caregivers to store, extract, and deliver dry drugs with the same familiar technique used with liquid oral drugs.

The patent pending design allows controlled and precise dosage and ensures all medication is dispensed directly to the child’s mouth. Designed with the entire supply chain in mind, the system fits common bottle sizes and can be pre-filled or filled at a pharmacy. The internal valve and bottle cap protect the drug through storage and use. The re-usable syringe comes in two sizes and has selectable dose settings.  Sympfiny™ is the first multiparticulate delivery device to dose the same as traditional liquid dispensers, creating an intuitive and user-friendly experience.
