Parsons Industrial Design: Practice in Contradiction
The BFA in product design—as well as the new MFA in industrial design (launching this fall) at Parsons The New School for Design are challenging students to consider, balance and reconcile dichotomies inherent to design practice—such as production and sustainability, or consumerism and need—with an eye toward shaping a more integrated future.
Taking into account environmental sustainability, entrepreneurial concerns, as well as the larger framework of the creative process that brings a product into being, students can be challenged to design products at various scales and locales of production, from low-volume to high-volume—from desktop manufacturing to international global supply-chains. Rama Chorpash, director of product design and an associate professor with tenure at Parsons, outlines curricular methodology to develop acquisition of core knowledge with degrees of depth and criticality— reflective of current and emerging complexity.
