Co-Founder, Juno
Creative entrepreneur, design leader, and community builder, Herman Chan spent the last 16 years in Seattle, Washington, crafting ideas that disrupt markets and fostering connections throughout the Pacific Northwest.
He co-founded Juno, a design-forward, sustainably driven sleep solutions company for young families. He invented the Juno Bassinet, named to TIME’s list of 100 best inventions of 2021. He serves as Vice-Chair of the IDSA Seattle Chapter and has been on the board for the past two terms.
Herman co-founded the boutique design studio Formfuture and was one of the first industrial designers to envision and launch Amazon Go, the world’s first cashier-less store. Before Amazon, he was a Senior Industrial Designer at TEAGUE, working in their Global Design Studio and Aviation Studio with clients such as Boeing and Hyundai/Kia, and airlines such as Emirates. He has developed numerous products and experiences that have redefined mobility and travel. Herman has been recognized with multiple patents and was recently awarded a 2021 IDEA and iF Design Award.
Herman was born in Vancouver, Canada, to immigrant parents of Chinese descent. He earned his Bachelor of Design (ID) at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and has lived in Seattle since 2007.

Statement of Candidacy (West District Representative – Districts Committee | 2023-2024 term)
Community. Industrial design is at an inflection point where we are all working to understand where it is headed. As the landscape changes, our resolve to create meaningful solutions in the physical and digital hasn’t. For many of us, IDSA is at the heart of our community. It is what I turned to as a student passionate about becoming a designer. When I felt most uncertain, the support from IDSA gave me the resolve to keep pushing forward (thank you, mentorship program).
I believe that harnessing the power of our community will help us shape the future of what ID means to every one of us. As West District Chapter Representative (DCR), I would strengthen the relationship between each chapter so that we can learn, collaborate, and create programs that resonate with the people and industries from where we live, work, and play. My experience as a board member and vice-chair for the IDSA Seattle Chapter allows me to offer valuable insights to further advance our programs with mentorship, networking, and education. As an entrepreneur, I would take my business acumen and work to find new ways to add value for our members. Finally, my enthusiasm and love for connection would help us create new partnerships and connections.
I am honored to be considered for this role as West DCR, and I look forward to our future together.
Herman is a design leader with over a decade of experience inventing revolutionary new experiences. From Amazon’s first cashier-less autonomous store, aircrafts for Boeing, to the world’s first pop-up bassinet that is healthier for baby and better for the planet. He has an entrepreneurial mindset and is on a mission to create a positive impact for people, community, and our planet.
Herman is Chair of IDSA’s Seattle Professional Chapter. To him, the chapter represents both Vancouver, BC, where he was born and studied industrial design, and Seattle, WA, where he has spent over a decade as a professional designer. His work with the Chapter team resulted in several positive contributions including securing corporate sponsorships (not something easily done!). Herman contributes his enthusiasm, love for people, and network of industry talents to strengthen the bond this group shares as a community.
