Derek Chen is a designer and the founder of Council Inc. As the CEO and Design Director of Council, Chen endeavors to find continuity between the designs of the mid-century and the designs of today, and to place American Design alongside the other international flavors of design (Italian, Scandinavian, Dutch, etc.) as an influential peer.
Chen holds a degree in Engineering and has a background in management consulting, both of which play a role in the work of his design consultancy. Chen’s own design work reveals a facility with technology, fabrication and manufacturing, as well as an appreciation for the visual and tactile appeal of natural forms and materials.
Chen lives and works in Oakland, California.
