The Power of “Design Routine” To Craft Habit-Centered Experience Ecosystems

Humans are inherently driven by routines, forming the foundation for our daily lives and habits. From early practices like sitting at a table for meals to daily personal care, routines establish the framework within which habits are developed and maintained. Learn how it’s routines that form habits and not the other way around. Recognizing the importance of the role of routine in habit formation, the concept of Design Routine emerges as a critical strategy in product and service development. This approach focuses on the detailed identification, analysis, definition and design of small, everyday routines that significantly influence design decisions. By creating products and services that naturally align with and integrate into these routines, designers can create a deeper and more meaningful connection between users and the products they choose. This methodology uplifts the traditional boundaries of product and service design, advocating for a more holistic understanding of user behavior from building a habit through well designed routines. It acknowledges that a product’s integration into a user’s routine is not just about the product itself but about how it harmoniously fits into the rhythm of their daily life. The ability of a product, whether it’s a bicycle or a car, to blend into and enhance these routines can significantly influence consumer preference, making it their brand of choice. This approach to design considers the full ecosystem of a user’s life, ensuring that products are not just functionally effective but also seamlessly integrated into daily routines.
