Metaphase Design Group (an IDSA Ambassador) and I.V. House, Inc. jointly received prestigious SILVER 2019 Edison Award in the Medical/Dental category for the design of TLC Splints. The Edison Awards, named after Thomas Alva Edison, recognize and honor the world’s best in innovators and innovations. The Edison Awards Gala was held last night, April 4, 2019 in New York City.

Metaphase Design Group, leading experts in the research, ergonomics and design of medical products and worldwide specialist in hand-intensive products and packaging, collaborated with I.V. House, Inc. to create a series of intravenous joint stabilization and IV insertion site protection products. These products include the I.V. House UltraDome®, the TLC® UltraSplint and the I.V. House UltraDressing®. All three products combine human factors and ergonomics to help protect and stabilize an intravenous line while allowing easy access for the medical professional. The devices are designed to be safe and gentle, especially for small children and the elderly, while preventing patients from accidentally dislodging or removing their IVs while they are hospitalized.

“This is a wonderful honor for a remarkable product that improves patient safety, increases nursing efficiency and treats patients with dignity and compassion,” noted Dr. Bryce Rutter, IDSA, founder and CEO of Metaphase Design Group. “I.V. House revolutionizes the IV therapy market and we are proud to be their innovation partner on the TLC Splints and their full product line.”

Metaphase Design Group and I.V. House have been continuously conducting user research for more than 10 years. This research highlights the importance of design thinking in product development and utilizes direct observation/interviews, work flow analysis, anthropometry, surface anatomy, somatotype analysis, prototype iterations and field testing to perfect the final products.

“I used my clinical and managerial experience in a pediatric Level One trauma center to assess the need and to develop TLC Splints,” said Lisa Vallino, CEO of I.V. House, Inc. “Metaphase’s user-centered innovation process utilized human factors engineering to stabilize joints for ideal IV therapy infusion, faster, easier assessments, reducing infiltrates, extending dwell times and reducing painful IV restarts.”

The Edison Awards judging panel was comprised of more than 3,000 professionals from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, including professional organizations representing a wide variety of industries and disciplines.

This is Metaphase’s second Edison Award win. In 2016, Metaphase won a Bronze Edison Award for its work on Bacterioscan’s 216Dx Laser Microbial Growth Monitor, designed to detect and measure bacterial growth indicative of a urinary tract infection.
