IDSA Partners with New TV Series “New York by Design”

IDSA continues its partnership with MWC Productions for a new television show, “New York by Design,” that is set in the city where IDSA was founded in 1965: New York, NY.

“New York by Design” tells some of the stories behind the great innovations that are changing the way we live our lives. Innovators will share the challenges they’re facing, the problems they’re solving and the amazing benefits their innovations are providing to individuals, communities, industry and society.

The countdown format television show features IDSA as an industry partner and IDSA members Mauro Porcini (Chief Design Officer, PepsiCo), Tucker Viemeister (Principal, Viemiester Industries), Scott Henderson (Principal, Scott Henderson, Inc), and Stephan Clambaneva (Principal and Founder, iD8trs) as judges and presenters.

Other world-renowned designers featured on the show include Karim Rashid, Stefan Sagmeister, and Debbie Millman. Visit NewYorkbyDesign.com to learn more!

This program follows the success of “California by Design” and advances IDSA’s mission to advocate for and highlight the industrial design profession. IDSA became involved with this endeavor because it offered a unique opportunity to celebrate the designers behind the products. The platform of this TV show amplifies the message and effort it takes to bring something to market and tells that story to a much larger audience than we could do alone.

“I get excited thinking about a kid watching this show and becoming inspired to learn more about what industrial design is. We hear time and time again that young creatives aren’t aware of our profession until they enter college or even later in their life. I hope this TV show provides that spark of inspiration and inquiry early on that could send someone into an exciting career path they never knew existed.”

– Chris Livaudais, IDSA Executive Director

Comments from “New York by Design” judge Stephan Clambaneva, IDSA, Sections Director on IDSA’s Board of Directors

This is where it all started. American industrial Design was arguably synonymous with New York ID when Henry Dreyfuss, FIDSARaymond Loewy, FIDSAWalter Dorwin Teague, FIDSAGeorge Nelson, FIDSAFlorence Knoll, H/IDSARowena Reed Kostellow, FIDSA, J. Gordon Lipincott, and others were writing some of the first chapters in the history of American design.

The evidence is all around us. Whether you explore the furniture maker boom in Brooklyn and the various Design Districts steeped with history, or whether you experience the city through the perspective of repurposed, redesigned, and upcycled built environmental objects such as the High Line, design is everywhere you look.

This city has always been about business, big business. Now, it has become all about the business of design. According to the Center for an Urban Future, there are more designers and creative design agencies here than in any other major metropolitan area in the US.

New York City has the largest concentration of designers and creative talent in the country. According to the latest count, more than 60,000 designers call New York City their home.

Comments from “New York by Design” presenter and judge Scott Henderson, IDSA

I’m excited to keep evangelizing the importance of design through platforms like the By Design network of television shows. It’s been incredible working on “New York by Design” (as well as one Innovation Story for the predecessor, “California By Design”).

“New York by Design” is a rare and unique primetime network television show about Industrial Design and UX Design, happening right here in the city that never sleeps: New York City.
