NYCxDESIGN, taking place May 10–22, 2019 in New York City, spotlights designs and designers across disciplines through a panoply of trade shows, exhibitions, talks, installations and open studios. And while the artistic and digital sides of design often hold sway at these kinds of events, industrial design remains a key component of the organization’s programming—owing in no small part to IDSA’s involvement at the executive level and enduring presence in the New York City design community.
“The Industrial Designers Society of America has been integral to the growth of the New York design scene for decades,” says Stephan Clambaneva, IDSA, who represents the Society on NYCxDESIGN’s steering committee. “As product and industrial design matured and evolved, we saw new partnerships develop: namely, a near decade-long participation at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), collaborations with WantedDesign since their inception, NYC Chapter events held during Design Week and, more recently, being part of the Design Talks at the Times Square Design Pavilion.”
Now in its seventh year, NYCxDESIGN incorporates ICFF, WantedDesign and the Design Pavilion under its umbrella of shows and festivals. Clambaneva has partnered with these organizations and others for years; and in representing IDSA, works to educate the broader design community about the value of having core industrial design skills in the digital age.
“I see people coming full circle, and realizing that we need to have what we call a holistic design approach,” he says. “Service design, experience design, interaction design—these disciplines all sprouted from industrial design.”
Events that Peter Schon, IDSA, Chapter Chair of IDSA’s NYC Chapter and Clambaneva have brought to NYCxDESIGN this year include:
- “There Are No Sustainable Materials” on May 13
- “A Sense of New York” on May 14
- “Future of Mobility for New York City – S(h)ifting through the Hype” on May 16
- “The Augmented Designer” on May 20
“There Are No Sustainable Materials,” a panel discussion hosted by IDSA NYC, Hyloh and The Circular Economy Network, focuses on achieving real sustainability through design, material choices and circular economy principles.
The experiential workshop “A Sense of New York” invites attendees to create new sensory interactions and come up with urban interventions to address specific wants and needs. The session is “back by popular demand,” says Clambaneva—the event came to fruition when he served as Chapter Chair, IDSA NYC from 2010–2011, before the existence of New York Design Week—and may be familiar to attendees of IDC 2018 who experienced “A Sense of NOLA.”
“Future of Mobility for New York City,” a panel discussion moderated by Clambaneva, goes beyond the design of autonomous vehicles to explore many other challenges, like competing business models for urban mobility, as well as the holistic, sustainable systems-approach needed for NYC.
“The Augmented Designer,” also moderated by Clambaneva, features a panel of digital design pioneers working at the intersection of augmented reality (AR) and industrial design as they dive deep into the latest 3D/AR/VR revolution.
