On Thursday, October 26, Georgia Tech’s IDSA Student Chapter held its annual ‘Pumpkin Ramble’ event, bringing together GTID students for a lively pumpkin carving competition. The annual tradition originated as a creative assignment for freshmen during the fall semester. Although the project was later removed from the curriculum, the concept evolved into the present-day ‘Pumpkin Ramble’ competition.

Kevin Shankwiler, Senior Lecturer & Undergraduate Program Coordinator for Georgia Tech’s School of Industrial Design, explained, “industrial design students are perfect for carving pumpkins because it requires artistic thinking, creativity, craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of materials. Carving a pumpkin demands all these skills—creative thinking to conceive an idea, artistry to bring it to life, and an understanding of the pumpkin itself as a material of manufacture.”

The ‘Pumpkin Ramble’ featured 13 pumpkin teams, showcasing the versatile skills of industrial design students. The transformed pumpkins were exhibited during Georgia Tech’s homecoming weekend, delighting alumni and visitors with their craftsmanship and creativity.
