Advanced Design SQ1 Con

October 6, 2017 - October 7, 2017

In the spirit of advocating for design education, the students of ADS felt they needed to further their mission and make their voices heard nationwide by organizing a conference specifically focused on design sketching. The planning committee, composed of seven Industrial Design students chose to call this conference Square 1 – a phrase that means to begin again after a dead-end or failure. This conference is meant to embrace failure, encourage process, and push creativity. Unlike other design conferences, which do not highlight the importance of design sketching, Square 1 will embrace the universal language of Industrial Design and encourage students to obtain its agency through: rapid visualization; visual communication; marker renderings; understanding hierarchy; product relationship; sketching techniques; speed; sketch notes; and storytelling.

Autodesk proudly presents the inaugural SQ1 CONFERENCE by Advanced Design Sketching. We’ll have renowned Industrial Designer Michael DiTullo giving the keynote address at the Motorola Mobility HQ in downtown Chicago, IL on Friday. Sketching workshops will be led by Jeff Smith, Michael DiTullo, Kelly Custer, Morgan Matt, Rotimi Solola, Aaron Powers, Sean Simmons, Hudson Rio, Reid Schlegel, Joey Zeledon, Todd Herlitz, Dan Zimmermann, Spencer Nugent, Jacob Ballard, Kevin Clarridge, Clifford Krapfl, and Dan Wheeler – all held at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) School of Design, all day on Saturday.
