2017 Education Symposium
August 16, 2017
Atlanta, GA

Today, the role of design is expanding beyond traditional boundaries with multifaceted challenges and exposure to complex, wicked problems.
Such an immersive shift has resulted in instant demand for education in the emerging areas of industrial design: design research, user experience (UX), integrative design, social design, entrepreneurship, etc. Most design educators still believe in the value of traditional industrial design and find themselves challenged to identify an appropriate balance in what many refer to as “accountable education.” We, as a collegial community, will utilize this symposium to share how others disseminate Emergent Pedagogy in Design and implement contextual relevance in cultivating the future of design education.
The 2017 symposium will empower engagements and networking with peers from around the world. We’ll connect on common issues and gain knowledge through group discussions on curriculum development case studies. The schedule features two keynote speakers, rapid-fire paper presentations, discussions about planned Graduate Student Merit Awards, a lunch sponsored by Eastman Innovation Lab and a look at what’s happening in other programs. (Please note, an invitation-only Educators Reception, hosted by Eastman Innovation Lab, is scheduled for the evening of Aug. 15. Invited educators will receive an email with specific RSVP instructions.)
