Who:
Dipali Aphale, IDSA is a California-based designer.

Recently, she graduated from a dual-masters program between Royal College of Art (MA) and Imperial College London (MSc with Merit).

What:
Aphale’s graduate thesis project, Ova, won a spot in the Global Grad Show during Dubai Design Week 2019.

Ova is an early stage screening kit that educates and helps identify common symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. The project was situated within the context of London, and was based around the operations of public healthcare in the UK.

The kit is complimented by a service blueprint, which outlines the product rollout concept. The rollout consists of (1) initial campaign content to prime citizens about the prominence of the condition, (2) the actual kit which gets sent out to young women registered with the NHS and prompts them to get a clinical diagnosis with their GP, and (3) a post-diagnosis digital platform to engage in self-led care through a community of women with PCOS.

When/Where:
The Global Grad Show takes place Sept. 12-16, 2019 in the Dubai Design District.

Why:
Says Aphale, “PCOS affects 20% of women in the UK and 8% of women globally, yet there is no standardized preventative service to educate or screen for symptoms… The underlying goals of the project are to increase user autonomy in regard to personal health, increase education and services around preventative health, and bring a light-hearted visual aesthetic to a typically clinical condition.”
