Member Spotlight: Celebrating Excellence in the 2023 Zinc Challenge

Verve

We are excited to highlight the achievements of two IDSA members, Martin Gagne and Eli Mikiten, in the 22nd edition of the International Zinc Association’s (IZA) annual Zinc Challenge. This prestigious competition encourages undergraduate students in North America to design accessories or components that harness the unique properties of zinc and the flexibility of the zinc die casting process.

Martin Gagne – Judge As a judge in the 2023 Zinc Challenge, Martin Gagne brought his expertise to evaluate the innovative designs submitted by aspiring industrial design students.

Eli Mikiten – Winner Congratulations to Eli Mikiten, the mind behind the winning project titled “Verve.” Representing the University of Oregon and under the guidance of Instructor Tom Bonamici, Eli’s project showcased how zinc alloys and the zinc die casting process can be harnessed to create robust and versatile housing solutions. The judges praised Eli’s well-justified alloy selection, demonstrating his thorough understanding of the materials and their application potential.

Judge comments

“Zinc is used extensively for housings due to its high strength with good thermal and electrical conductivity. An excellent choice for a robust housing.”

“A good explanation for the alloy selection which is appropriate for the application.”

“Product could also be used in other market sectors.”

The 2023-2024 Zinc Challenge posed an exciting opportunity for young designers to explore the possibilities of zinc and its die casting process. The challenge emphasized the importance of sustainability, recyclability, and innovative design solutions that can shape a brighter future.

Congratulations to Martin Gagne for his contribution as a judge and Eli Mikiten for his winning project!
