Alvaro Uribe, IDSA, founder of Alvaro Uribe Design, recently launched the Coliseum Chair, a collaboration with Italian furniture brand Slide Design. Inspired by the iconic arches of the Roman Coliseum, the chair merges historical influences with contemporary rotomolding technology to create a sculptural yet highly functional seating solution.
The Coliseum Chair began as an exploration of rotational molding, a process often used for urban infrastructure due to its strength and durability. Alvaro drew inspiration from this technique, starting with a monolithic form, refining it with softened edges and structural ridges that echo the rhythmic arches of the Coliseum.
Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the chair integrates practical features such as ventilated cutouts for airflow and a sloped seat to facilitate quick water drainage after rain. The result is a visually striking yet highly adaptable chair, ideal for modern spaces that embrace both heritage and innovation.

Alvaro has been an active member of the IDSA community, recently taking on the role of Pratt Industrial Design Chapter Advisor. His involvement in mentoring emerging designers has been a fulfilling experience, allowing him to guide students in their professional growth and career development. “IDSA has provided me with a valuable opportunity to support young talent in their professional development, helping them achieve their goals while mentoring them to succeed in the field. IDSA has been incredibly supportive in helping students thrive, and I’m excited to continue my involvement with the community, both in this role and beyond.”
