WUN – A shared courtyard for Rohingya women

Around half a million refugees at the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar area are women. They live in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, and face gender-based violence and sociocultural stigma around menstruation. The camp faces heavy rainfall and extreme flooding for most of the year. WUN is a design intervention to support these women that uses the concept of the Venus flower basket sponge as an inspiration for a shared courtyard for Rohingya women. The multifunctional space consists of a community courtyard at the center along with three domed tents, one each for private toilets, a laundry and washing facility, and a medical unit for gynecology consultation.
