About

Spitfire is a design studio headquartered in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Our founder, Isis Shiffer, is an award-winning industrial designer with a background in fine art and bicycle frame-building. Our diverse team brings a broad range of perspectives to every project we work on, united by a desire to leave the world more beautiful than we found it.

While we are primarily an industrial design studio, we see design as a tool to solve problems in whatever format works best. We’ve styled buses, invented cookware, designed successful crowdfunding campaigns, created packaging suites, started and refreshed brands, built websites and apps, and much more.

Working with Spitfire is like adding a highly capable design department to your company for as long as you need it. We work closely with our clients from ideation to launch day, overseeing every aspect of design and making sure that each element comes together efficiently, elegantly and on time.

Why work with us?

We are small, focused and picky. Our clients get full attention and commitment from day one. We put the time and effort into truly understanding your brand, goals and path forward, and prioritize great communication. We only take on projects we really believe in, and approach every design challenge with exactitude and humanism.

Project Portfolio

Toymint Cars

Toymint asked us to design a toy car that recalled 20th century luxury and modern speed. We took inspiration from the great designers of Bugatti, Aston Martin and more to design a simplified car that would trigger imaginative play.

Both the wood and chrome models are CNC’ed by North American vendors. High quality wheels and bearings and individual ID tokens make these heirloom pieces, designed for generations.

Circadian Optics

Circadian Optics approached us when they were a two-person startup trying to develop the first aesthetically pleasing therapy lamps. Previously, 10k lumen lamps had the form of plain, medical looking boxes. From the pocket sized travel Luxy to the deco inspired Lattis, we introduced a wide range of aesthetic options designed to fit in any home.

Seven lamps later, Circadian was a thriving brand featured in Architectural Digest, the Wall Street Journal, Good Housekeeping and more. A successful Shark Tank appearance led to funding and national recognition.

Silly Goose

Sometimes design is just fun. We developed Silly Goose’s bibs and tableware with an eye for high contrast, friendly visuals that both babies and parents would gravitate towards.

We also found some unexpected material challenges – in order to get those appealing shiny eyes and noses, we had to insert separate silicone details and mold the rest of the bib around them. Extra steps and a little extra safety testing, but worth it for the cutest bibs on the market.

Summit Stability

The Aspen Ballhead is a lightweight, highly flexible tripod head targeted at landscape photographers. We partnered with Summit to optimize its functionality, aesthetics and user interface.

It’s one of the first in the business to use a hollow titanium ball, as well as the U-shaped cradle which creates an uniquely free range of motion. It was part of a highly successful kickstarter campaign.

Nordic Wave

Nordic Wave’s Viking is one of the first vertical cold plunges to hit the market. We focused on achieving a stylish design that would both stand out and blend in – a must for large pieces that need to look good in homes, gyms and spas.

In addition to the aesthetic design, we worked with a US-based rotomolding vendor to optimize the Viking for production.

The Viking has been called out for ‘Best Design’ in The Spruce, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and more.

Benchmark

We designed the Sidekick SD Card Case for Benchmark Studio (another small Brooklyn business!)

It is a sturdily built, weather resistant, aluminum and rubber case that fits between a camera and a tripod. This is one of those products that has to  feel like jewelry, look like tech and hold up like a tank. It took many iterations and edits but we’re super pleased with the result.

Kulala Lamp

Kulala is an innovative brand, using scientific principles to help babies (and parents!) sleep through the night.

Designing an all wood lamp with no visible hardware is one of the trickiest material challenges we’ve encountered. We used specially treated veneer for the lens and conductive copper sheet for the controls, hiding everything inside a wooden chassis.

Ultimately Kulala is an heirloom quality nightlight that can be used at any age.

Cruzi

Cruzi is a personal, folding shopping cart designed for urban living that we developed for a startup based in Dubai.

Compared to the rattling wire carts generally associated with grocery shopping, Cruzi feels like a racecar. We used big wheels, good quality bearings and a unique folding mechanism that lets it pack away easily into a trunk or closet.

Icy-Mojo

The Facial Cold Plunge is Icy-Mojo’s flagship product. We developed it along with their branding and packaging.

It works as an ice tray that unfolds into a bowl for a refreshing facial bath. Its all-in-one folding nature makes it great for travel.

As with any folding product, this presented technical challenges. We went through many different prototypes before settling on a design that was easy to use, pleasing to look at, and relatively inexpensive to produce.
