On Aug. 18 at IDSA’s International Design Conference 2017, winners of the IDSA Awards were revealed:
Education Award
Ed Dorsa, IDSA, retired in 2017 after nearly two decades as an associate professor and the chair of the ID program at Virginia Tech. He also served as education VP on IDSA’s Board of Directors and as an IDSA International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) juror. In 2006, he was named one of the “Most Admired ID Educators” by DesignIntelligence.
Young Educator of the Year Award
Hector Silva, IDSA, joined University of Notre Dame as a research assistant in 2017, after serving as an adjunct assistant professor of ID at University of Illinois at Chicago. SIlva is chair of IDSA’s Chicago Chapter and design lead at H Design, working with companies such as Crate & Barrel, DesignLab, Nickelodeon, LeapFrog, Foster Grant, Insight Product Development, Lund & Company Invention and various entrepreneurs. Silva also founded the student-led Advanced Design Sketching organization.
Personal Recognition Award
Charles Mauro, IDSA, traces his roots in design to working with product design pioneers and IDSA Fellows Henry Dreyfuss and Raymond Loewy. Mauro holds a master’s degree in ergonomics from NYU, where he was a research fellow at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. He is a certified human factors engineering professional. Since 1975, he has been president of New York City-based MauroNewMedia, which provides professional usability engineering and user interface design consulting services.
IDSA Academy of Fellows:
Marianne Grisdale, FIDSA, served as secretrary/treasurer and Midwest District VP on IDSA’s Board of Directors. She is vice president of TEAMS Design USA and has earned numerous awards, including a Silver IDEA. Previously, she contributed to design and project management at Herbst Lazar Bell for more than 15 years. Grisdale has a BFA in industrial design from College for Creative Studies.
John Barratt, FIDSA, is chair emeritus of IDSA after serving as chair of the Society’s Board of Directors. Barratt is president and CEO of design consultancy TEAGUE, founded in 1926 by design industry icon Walter Dorwin Teague. Barratt has strengthened TEAGUE’s partnerships with some of the world’s leading brands including Boeing, Microsoft, Samsung and Intel. Barratt earned his master’s degree in industrial design from Leicester Polytechnic, UK after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Three Dimensional Design from Teesside Polytechnic, UK.
