IDSA SF Event Recap: Diversity in Design

In January 2017, the IDSA San Francisco Chapter and AIGA San Francisco Chapter co-hosted a wide-ranging panel of designers—moderated by The Techies Project founder—to tackle the issue of diversity in design.

“The community and the walls that came down were amazing,” says IDSA San Francisco Chapter Chair, IDSA Women in Design Special Interest Section Vice Chair and International Design Excellence Awards 2017 Juror Ti Chang, IDSA. “This event was not one that proclaimed to know the answers—but a platform to start conversations and understanding.”

The powerful portraits and interviews by Helena Price, a San Francisco-based photographer, feature the inspiring stories of more than 100 underrepresented women, seniors, people of color, LGBTQ and others in Silicon Valley tech. “I believe everyone learned something about each other,” says Chang.

Panelists included:

  • Ana Arriola, IDSA, global VP of UX and design at Samsung for visual display and digital appliances and UXV Studio founder, CEO and executive creative director of Minimalisms and IDSA IDEA 2017 juror
  • Chloe Madison Parfitt, product designer at AlphaStreet and founder at Queird
  • Michelle Morrison, design program manager at Facebook, organizer at Designers + Geeks
  • Melanie Araujo, product designer at Young & Co, founder of Front & Center
  • Dan Miller, CEO at Level Therapy
The project has two main goals: to show the outside world a more comprehensive picture of people who work in tech, and to bring attention to people in the industry whose stories have never been heard, considered or celebrated. “We believe storytelling is a powerful tool for social impact and positive change,” organizers say.
