Greg Bass

Co-founder, Telegraph Studio Greg Bass is known as an expert in technical soft-goods design and development. He graduated from Pratt Institute in 2002 with a Master’s degree in Industrial Design. Shortly after graduating, Greg began working at The North Face in the Equipment Division. While there, he worked on a variety of products, from backpacks to sleeping bags to tents, including technical backpacks for Himalayan expeditions and family camping tents. He also introduced the first line of travel luggage for The North Face. Since 2010, Greg has worked in Design Direction and Product Leadership roles for other sport and outdoor brands including Timbuk2 and Specialized Bicycles. In 2018, Greg co-founded Telegraph Studio, a consultancy that works with both start-up and well-established brands on products from concept to first production. Telegraph offers product design, graphic design, technical illustration, development, line planning and sourcing services.

Technical Soft Goods: Design Through Refine

As a designer, you will find that drawing and concept generation is only a small part of getting a great product to market. The process of working with factories is key to understanding manufacturing constraints. Personally testing and reviewing customer testing data is another huge learning opportunity to help refine the final product. When making a technical soft goods product, concept to finalization is not usually a straight path. You must be ready to listen to your collaborators.
