Remembering Frank M. Grunwald

Frank Grunwald (4)

IDSA mourns the passing of Frank M. Grunwald, a luminary in the field of industrial design, who passed away on August 30, 2023, at the age of 90. Frank’s life was a testament to resilience, creativity, and dedication. Born in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia, in 1932, Frank led a remarkable life that led him to become a celebrated figure in the design community.

Frank’s early life was marked by incredible challenges. He and his father, Dr. Kurt Grunwald, were Holocaust survivors. Tragically, his mother and older brother perished in the Auschwitz gas chambers, but Frank miraculously escaped as he was pushed from death row into a group of older boys who were saved in order to be part of the Nazi slave labor population. In 1949, Frank and his father escaped from communist Czechoslovakia, ultimately settling in the United States in 1951.

Frank’s professional journey in industrial design began when he obtained his degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute. His career included significant roles at General Electric, Philco Ford, and Thomson Multimedia. His design work spanned small appliances, audio products, television, and consumer electronics.

Frank was committed to educating and mentoring the next generation of industrial designers. He frequently shared his knowledge and experiences with design students and was a visiting lecturer at Purdue University and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

In addition to his illustrious career, Frank was an avid sculptor and artist. His love for art and music was a constant throughout his life.

Frank will be remembered not only for his remarkable resilience but also for his significant contributions in the world of industrial design. IDSA extends its heartfelt condolences to Frank’s family and loved ones.
