One Park: Building a Holistic Visitor Experience at Portland’s Washington Park

Since its founding in 1871, Washington Park in Portland, OR, has grown to include several of the region’s most beloved and unique gardens and cultural institutions, such as the Rose Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, the World Forestry Center, and the Oregon Zoo. With multiple owners, institutions, and government agencies, Washington Park has had trouble finding internal alignment about its future. The design team led a human-centered process to develop a strategic plan built on the mantra of “one park.” This one-park mentality pushed the partners to see the park from the visitors’ perspective and work collectively.
