IDSA TOR: Discovering Impactful Design Challenges in the Global South

June 14, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Dr. Bilton will share examples of projects and designs by CGEN students that have led to positive impact in communities in the Global South. Design is often conducted in the developed world for the top of the income pyramid. However, more than half of the world’s population earns less than $10 per day, posing unique design challenges. Designers from the developed world are often out of step with the needs of the developing world resulting in designs that don’t address the core problem or miss important local factors, resulting in failure when implemented in the developing world context.

This talk will discuss the challenges associated with the collaborative problem identification, design, validation, and manufacturing of technologies aimed to improve quality of life in the developing world. Work currently being done by the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN) at the University of Toronto in the areas of food engineering, improved irrigation technologies, drinking water, and sustainable sanitation will highlight these challenges and present the potential impact of appropriate technologies.
