U.S. industrial designer who was born and grew up in Groton, New York. At age 19, he was drafted into the United States Army. He Joined the 10th Mountain Division and was wounded in Northern Italy in February 1945.
Stevens was the president of Philip Stevens Associates, Ltd., based in Skaneateles, New York, and a graduate of Syracuse University. Since 1954, he has managed design consulting offices in and around Central New York. Before coming to Central New York and establishing his own firm, he worked as an aircraft engineer on high-altitude bomber aircraft. As a design consultant, he has helped clients in the design of power hand tools, business machines, pumps, engines, and underground mining machinery.
Stevens has also championed product safety and has testified before a U.S. Senate Committee supporting the development of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and a Presidential Commission on fire prevention and control.
For his service to the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and his excellence in industrial design, he was made a Fellow of the Society in 1975. He has also served IDSA in the capacity of vice president. He has been the recipient of two Master Design Awards and his firm's work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Robertson Center Gallery in Binghamton and the Hanover Fair in West Germany.
He is the author of Industrial Design: A Practicing Professional, published in 2002, which can function as a guide for professional designers or as a text for industrial design students.
