Industrial designer born in Aurich, Germany. As a young man in art school, he rebelled against traditional art and design practices and developed a reputation as a radical troublemaker. He found other like-minded artists and enrolled as a Bauhaus student in 1927, graduating in 1930.
He began practice in the Berlin studios of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer, his former instructors at the Bauhaus, then worked at the B.A.G. Lighting Manufacturing Company in Turgi, Switzerland, initiating mass-production techniques in manufacturing.
Later, after several years designing lighting for the Corso Theater in Zurich, he returned to Germany to work with Herman Gautel, a furniture manufacturer in Oldenburg. In 1937 he was invited by Moholy-Nagy to join the New Bauhaus in Chicago and in 1952 became the first director of the new design program at Georgia Institute of Technology, a position he held until his retirement in 1971.
Hin was the only Bauhaus student to become an IDSA member.
