Professional Colleagues,
Our purpose and identity as industrial designers should be clearer than it is.
Education: Among the living inhabitants of this planet, the drive to direct, organize and create is the single characteristic that bonds and identifies human beings. As a matter of biblical record, creativity most closely parallels the nature of people with that of a Supreme Creator. From the beginning of recorded history, the human ability to communicate create ideas, solve complex problems and design objects of grace and utility have been embedded in the origins of our cultural and technological growth. These characteristics have enabled the progress and accomplishments of our civilization.
At its best, industrial design education refines, applies and evaluates the record of this most significant human attribute. We give graphic form to communication and sculptural form and utility to technology. We make both desirable. Design education is a natural foundation for coping with life’s challenges and often the beginning of a rewarding career. It’s in our country’s best interest to support and embrace the preparation of future designers.
Professional Unity: As educators and practitioners, we represent the alpha and omega of IDSA. I propose that both important aspects of our organization seek ways that our society can celebrate and use the diverse qualities that distinguish us. Shared knowledge and experience nourish the development of our mutually supportive professions. We are each much less without the other. I hope the designers and the educators who are present at this conference will help establish a stronger bond between practice and education.
Welcome to the Eastman National IDSA Education Conference.
