It is my pleasure to invite you to the inaugural IDSA Medical Design Conference,The Usability Ecosystem, being held Nov. 6-8 at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation(CAMLS), the state-of-the-art virtual hospital and simulation facility in Tampa, FL. This venue offers an exciting opportunity for workshops conducted in the context of a clinical environment.
The healthcare space provides a unique and complex landscape of problems and opportunities for creative research, design and development. This training seminar, conducted by a forum of experts, focuses on how to approach design in the healthcare domain within the realm of usability. Topics range from the evolving synergy between the industrial design and human factors engineering disciplines to enabling the healthcare culture and treating illness.
Nov. 6-7: The Usability Ecosystem will deliver advanced content for those product development and usability specialists practicing in the healthcare space that are looking for opportunities to further develop their knowledge, skills and inspiration. The conference will be balanced between two primary formats:
Discussions on why and what design can do to affect usability and,
In situ workshops on how usability design methods can be effective.
Nov. 8: As an added benefit to attendees, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) is holding a one-day workshop, Design Control: the Intersection of Human Factors, Industrial Design and Risk Management on Saturday, Nov. 8, 8am – 5pm at CAMLS immediately following The Usability Ecosystem. At the end of the program, participants will be able to explain the requirements and expectations for usability and human factors (HF) in designing a medical product, identify the role of usability and HF in designing a safe and effective product and identify the role of risk management in the usability and HF process. For additional information regarding this portion of the event, please contact Deborah Reuter, AAMI’s Senior Vice President of Education or click here.

As much as I like taking stuff apart, there's nothing cooler than building your very own gadget. The BigShot is a build-it-yourself digital camera kit that has adjustable lenses, gears and dynamo (the camera is powered with a hand crank), to teach kids about optics, mechanics and energy.
Okay, this has nothing to do with NPE... But Rob, the 8 Bottles guy, had the bitchenest pair of bamboo eye glasses… I had to take some pics... He told me that were insanely expensive (not surprisingly).
