The Western PA IDSA chapter would like to invite all members, students, and anyone interested in design to take a field trip to the 2014 Pittsburgh International Auto Show Saturday February 15th at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
The first big event of 2014 organized by the Western PA chapter was on the evening of the 17th of January and it proved to be a memorable one. We were counting on the mix of high profile speakers, notable venue and a responsive audience to work its magic... and it did! One hundred and seventy people from in and around the city of Pittsburgh came to the Carnegie Museum of Art to hear what Surya Vanka, Director of User Experience, Microsoft and Matt Beale, President, Daedalus had to say about the New Experience Model.
On January 17 2014, the IDSA of Western PA features a talk by Surya Vanka, Microsoft's Director of User Experience, at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Entitled ‘Design Thinking at Scale’, Mr. Vanka’s talk reveals what's next for Microsoft and offers insight into transforming a large company that’s known for technology prowess into one that is driven by the user and the experience they truly need.
Srini Srinivasan, CEO of LUMIUM, was elected to the prestigious Executive Board Member position at the 28th General Assembly of International Council of Societies of Industrial Designers (Icisd).

Nick Foster – industrial designer, engineer, futures thinker – promised a “grim” subject matter at the IDSA event last Thursday at Groupon in Palo Alto, and he did not disappoint. In under 60 minutes, Nick gave us a history of how manufacturing was pushed out of northern England, killed our buzz about 3D printing, told us to focus on the mundane instead of the aspirational, and said that Santa Claus wasn't real. OK, the last one didn't happen, but the first three stand.
People aren’t disappointed by current-state connected devices because their creators lacked vision, instead we're let down because their dreams exceed the reality of what technology can deliver.
As design thinkers, we’re focused on identifying the hard tradeoffs in product design while keeping the user perspective front and center. This is imperative no matter what the size of your business - from startups to multinationals.
