At its annual conference in San Diego, California IDSA honored the Association, "for its leadership in recognizing the value of design. In 1990, NHMA established a scholarship to recognize talented industrial design students and to build an awareness for the housewares industry.
IDSA and BusinessWeek's Design and Business Catalyst Award ran from 2002-2008. The award celebrated those designs and designers that made business success happen.

The Design & Business Catalyst Award captures data on design impact and shows companies that design is fundamentally woven into business success. The Catalyst is the sister award to the premier annual Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA). Ravi Sawhney, IDSA, president and CEO, RKS Design, is the initiator of the catalyst. The second annual Catalyst Award is sponsored by IDSA and BusinessWeek, the premier business magazine.
The entry deadline for the 2004 Catalyst program is April 23, 2004 and late entries will be accepted until April 30, 2004.
Design is vital to all aspects of our daily lives. By bringing depth, clarity and transparency to the industrial design process, the Catalyst program reveals the power of design by recording the stories of the most successful design programs. These cases are meant to document the process and value that design offers to business. Cases are chosen by an independent review panel consisting of designers and business people.
The IDSA Executive Committee may vote a Special Award to organizations and projects for notable results, creative and innovative concepts and long-term benefits to the profession, its educational functions and society at large. Prior to 1996, this award was given to individuals as well.
