CARRIE FERRENCE

Carrie Ferrence comes from rural Pennsylvania, where a fourth-generation corner storeowner raised her. While rural life provided her with a strong foundation in social equity, hard work and long hikes, she discovered her true path by a diverse and meaningful career in international development, construction salvage and education. She is co-owner of Stockbox Grocers, a miniature grocery tucked inside a reclaimed shipping container and placed into a parking lot to bring good food to more people. Ferrence has more than 10 years of experience in strategic planning and retail management for small businesses and advocacy for nonprofits.

STANLEY HAINSWORTH
Chairman and Chief Creative Officer
Tether

Stanley Hainsworth is the chairman and chief creative officer for design consultancy Tether. Before founding Tether, he was VP of global creative for Starbucks. There he oversaw all creative aspects of Starbucks—new products, packaging systems, seasonal promotions, brand campaigns, advertising and collateral materials.
Hainsworth spent 12 years at Nike as a creative director working on everything from product launches to Niketowns to the Olympics. After Nike, he moved to Denmark to join the Lego Company as their global creative director. While at Lego he directed a total visual overhaul of the Lego brand from top to bottom, including packaging, the Web, retail and brand stores.
He is a national board member of AIGA, a featured speaker on Creativity worldwide and the recipient of awards from ID magazine, Communication Arts, The Library of Congress, Graphis, Type Directors Club, HOW International and more.

TOM HOBBS

Teague

Tom Hobbs provides inspiration, motivation and direction for Teague’s design team. Originally from the UK, he studied at the Leeds College of Art and the University of Wales. He has been in the industry for over 15 years, working with the legendary Colors Magazine and clients such as Sony, Nikon, Sprint, Verizon, Wells Fargo and Amazon. He joined Teague in 2010 and currently works closely with high-tech clients, including Microsoft and Intel. Hobbs has received numerous awards over the course of his career, including accolades from IDEA, iF and Red Dot. In 2000, ID magazine named him of the “Forty under Thirty.” A variety of publications, including The Guardian and The New York Times, has published his work. Hobbs believes in bringing passion to everything he does. “Indifference” he says, “is a disease.”

KEVIN KUDO-KING

Olson Kundig Architects

Kevin Kudo-King is a principal at Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects where he has practiced since 1996. Recognized by the American Institute of Architects with the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm award, the practice is known for its attention to detail, integration of craft, art and collaborative process. His work includes projects found throughout the United States and in Asia, including residences, institutional and commercial projects. He is active in all aspects of design, production and management, particularly projects involving a high level of collaboration between designers, artists and craftspeople. Architectural Digest, Interior Design, Art + Auction and Town & Country and other numerous publications have featured Kudo-King’s projects. He serves on the board of Artist Trust, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support individual Washington State artists working in all disciplines. He holds a bachelor’s in architecture from the University of Arizona.

CARL LEDBETTER

Microsoft Corporation

Carl Ledbetter is senior principal industrial design manager in Microsoft Corp.’s Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB). He leads industrial design for entertainment hardware experiences, including Xbox and Kinect. Before joining IEB in 2006 to design the Zune media player, Ledbetter was part of the Windows Hardware Innovation Group chartered to lead the industrial design vision for next-generation Windows PC hardware experiences. He also led industrial design for the Microsoft PC hardware business where he and his team designed desktop mice, trackballs and keyboards. Prior to joining Microsoft, he held industrial design positions at Fluke Corp. and Patton Design. A recipient of numerous national and international design awards, Ledbetter has over 100 patents to his credit. A longstanding member of IDSA and DMI, he graduated with a bachelor’s in industrial design from Western Washington University in 1987.

NIKKI PFARR
Senior Design Strategist
Artefact

Nikki Pfarr is a senior design strategist at Artefact and a former Ph.D. candidate at Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute. She is a founding partner of the Brains, Behavior & Design Group and was previously a UX designer at Google. She holds a master's of design from IIT’s Institute of Design and a bachelor’s degree from MIT. She has led workshops on incorporating behavioral economics into user-centered design for the IIT Institute of Design Executive Education summer camp series, the Chicago chapter of the IxDA and various Artefact clients. Her original research on the implications of behavioral economics on design research practices was published in the 2010 conference proceedings of the International Design Research Society.

ANA MARIA PINTO da SILVA

Microsoft

Ana Pinto da Silva leads design for Microsoft’s Strategic Prototyping and Advanced Strategies Group (StratPro). Her work synthesizes her interests in storytelling, architecture and emerging technologies and her deep passion for creative collaboration. Her previous experience includes game development, architecture, and interactive media. Her work has garnered several awards including the Al Falah Grant from U.C. Berkeley in 2002 and a Webby Worthy Award in 2003. In addition to her media work, she has been an instructor at San Francisco State’s Multimedia Studies Program developing and teaching courses o n interactive media history and development. She has extensive non-profit board experience including her current work as a board member for Artist Trust and is the founder of Seattle’s Pecha Kucha chapter. Ana received her bachelor’s in architecture from U.C. Berkeley and her MDesS from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. She is a graduate of Seattle’s Leadership Tomorrow program, serving as class valedictorian in 2009.

MARK SELANDER
Industrial Design Consultant

Mark Selander graduated from Western Washington University in 1998 with a degree in industrial design. His first creative job was operating a chipmunk puppet named Rudy for a Japanese language program hosted by an outcast member of MTV’s “The Real World.” Selander currently works as an industrial design consultant developing consumer products, packaging and retail spaces for Seattle creative firms Pensar Development, Anvil Studios, Wexley School for Girls and others. His past work includes conceptual design on video games and entertainment titles for Microsoft, EA, Capcom, ESPN, UPN and Nintendo. He was a core member of the team that created the groundbreaking trans-media marketing campaign for Stephen Spielberg’s film “AI,” and he has helped develop scores of pitches, concepts and campaigns that have ranged from dizzying success to being thankful that at least his mom still loves him.

David Thorpe is a founding partner of Industry, a design and innovation company that specializes in integrating product, interactive, retail and brand design. He was previously with Ziba for over 17 years. As creative director of Ziba’s Digital Lifestyle Group, Thorpe led strategic creative programs for a wide range of companies. He blends a solid technical background with strategic thinking and innovation management expertise to redefine markets through design. His work helped win numerous IDEAs for his clients. Active in sustainable design, he received the Shades of Green-Best of the Northwest award for sustainable architecture. He earned his bachelor’s in engineering-product design at Stanford University.

JON WINEBRENNER

Jon Winebrenner is a design professional who has been working as a designer in various capacities for over 15 years. He's worked in many facets of the design world from wireless product development to packaging to being a comic strip artist. He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s in industrial design and is currently a partner in a full-service product development company (OneOak Design), producer of a DVD for the design industry (the.brief.DVD) and moderator on the Core77 Discussion Forums (a.k.a. ip_wirelessly). Oh, he also has ADHD.

PAUL WYLDE

Currently based in Seattle, Paul is founder, CEO and creative director of paulwylde – a brand, innovation and design consultancy that specializes in designing for hospitality. His current clients include Jet Blue Airways, Coca Cola, Hilton Global, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Panasonic Avionics, Connxys Technologies and Solaseed Air. His projects span brand strategy, experience and service design, food and beverage and new product development. Before establishing his own consultancy, he was the first-ever creative director for the Aviation Studio of Teague, where for two years he led a team of 51 in developing aircraft cabin design strategies for Boeing in addition to brand consultancy for a number of international airlines including Gol, South West Airlines, Air Canada, Etihad and Emirates. He joined Teague having spent time in New York City as creative director for Imagination (USA) Inc. There, he led the strategic and creative output of the agency for a number of international clients, including Johnson & Johnson and the airline alliance, One World. Wylde studied product design at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication before completing a master’s in design at Glasgow School of Art. He is a member of the advisory board of and visiting lecturer to The University of Washington ID and teaches at Syracuse University, The London School of Marketing, Central Saint Martins School of Art and London Metropolitan University.
